DXRE v0.4.1 - Spodi (13 replies, 1653 views) (2003-Nov-5)

Yeeha! I finally finished remaking the site after my virus from a few months ago, DXRE is finally back with a new version. There is a bit of improvements like NPC AI and movement changes, along with fixing the particle engine. It still has a long ways to go until done, but it is now much farther.

But wait, that's not a game, that's an engine (not complete at all). It seems you misunderstood, Xan. And for the engine, it looks really good!

Thanks VBBR. Yeah, it's not a game, it's an open source engine for DX8. It still has a long way to go, though for how lazy I am, it's pretty far ;)

Uhm, as far as acually being finished, I am not sure. I dont plan on it being too soon, though I am about to make another big release probably around early December. All the stuff that will be on that (and more) is on the Features section on the site. =)

Great, I'll be waiting. It looks like your engine has a lot of potential. And when it's finished, whty don't you try porting some features to 3D? 'cause i'm making a 3D Engine, pretended to be open source, but as i'm almost alone making it... You could just port the maths, positioning etc. code, as I'm doing the render, setup and all the rest... just wanting a little help, if avaliable.

I've never personally moved into 3d. I just prefer 2d over 3d, it's one dimension more than I want to deal with ;)

Humm, then you could try isometric views. It's kinda a mix of 2D and 3D, and maybe it can be REALLY mixed, like the scenery being 2D (isometric tiles) and the objects, characters, and all the moving things being 3D (Like Final Fantasy 7, 8 & 9). This can be great, 'cause it's good-looking, since the scenery can be full detailed, as it's 2D, and also the objects and characters, as there won't be big graphic processing for the scenery and more processing power will be avaliable for them. And, as I mentioned earlier, as in FF, the scenery doesn't NEED to be isometric; for some special ocasions it could be any angle, just would be necessary to inform what angle it was to calculate the 3D things. (And maybe 3D graphics for cut-scenes and such.)

For Xan, if you check out the site under Features you can see the features that will be in the new version (well, the big ones at least). One of them is being able to kill the npcs ;) I had SYC based off of this where you can kill them in a huge bloodbath with guns, but thats a different story =P For VBBR, I was thinking of doing Iso but didn't want to bother converting all the graphics and modifying the engine enough to do it. Though, I could make it so you can rotate objects so the same texture can give multiple looks since I'm starting to run out of ideas on what to add =P
