Space Bandits Alpha - brzgames (11 replies, 2111 views) (2003-Mar-10)

Space Bandits is a space shooter I've been working on for about 3 months. It's a mix of 2D and 3D graphics. I've posted a link to the download below (You need DirectX8 or later installed, and the VB runtime already installed.) Use the cursor keys or joystick to move (keys are not mappable yet), and Insert fires. Also, A ans S strafe left and right. I greatly appreciate anyone letting me know if it runs, and (assuming it does) what kind of framerate you're getting.(It's largely unoptimized.) I also hope to get some feedback/suggestions from you guys to improve it. Thanks

I think you have an overflow problem somewhere, the game would crash after a while. The keyboard controls were inverted (left/right) and I got nothing from the joystick, but it was playable and I got the full 100fps on the first two levels, dropping to 70 something over the background on level 3.

Thanks for trying it out. I'll look into the overflow thing, and the joystick issue (the joystick should work?!?) Would you mind telling me your system specs so I can compare framerates? Thanks.

What are the controls? At the menu screen I can press the up and down arrow keys to select Game start, Options, or Exit, but I couldn't figure out how to get past that :) I tried Alt, Ctrl, Enter, Space, and all the letters on my keyboard, but I couldn't start the game.

Sorry. I guess I should have posted that :) Use the cursor keys for movement. Use Insert to select a menu item/or fire a weapon. A and S strafes left or right.

It's a P4 1.7 with a GF2 Ultra. About speed - if I hold down fire I drop 15-20 fps.

Thanks AT. Ok, I think I have the overflow problem fixed now. I also made a few changes to the joystick code, so hopefully it will work on everyones machine now. I also inverted the controls. Just for everyones info, you have to get past level 3 to get to the Weapons shop to buy new weapons.

Joystick works now. After playing it for a while on the keyboard I start to hear clicking (keyboard overflow) though the game carries on.

Thanks again AT. You've been a big help in debugging this thing. Ok, I think the keyboard click issue had to do with how I was setting the cooperative level for the keyboard. It should (hopefully) be fixed now. I updated the full alpha zip, and updated the patch file with the latest version. Patch http://www.brzgames.com/SBAlphaUpdate.zip Full http://www.brzgames.com/sb.zip I've also added a couple of other things to the shop, and changed the menu and game info to use bitmaps instead of the plain font I was using.

Controlling the game is a little confusing since when you turn your view rotates, but the radar doesn't, so its difficult to find in which direction you are going. Maybe when you rotate your ship your radar should rotate as well, I think that might help my poor sense of direction ;)

Hmmm. I never really thought of it, but that's not a bad idea. Originally I was going to make your blip on the radar an arrow to show which way you're heading, but the rotating radar idea sounds like it would be more intuitive for the player. Thanks Peter.
