I am looking in to frontends for DX for VB6. The two most promising I have found thus far are DaBooda and dxGame. Does anyone have any experience with either or both of these? Any recommendations as to which is better? I am leaning towards DaBooda as it is open source. Or are there any other good ones out there that I should check out.

Thanks!

In my opinion DaBooda has a lot of great features, and being that it is open-source, it opens up another world of opportunity. I've been using it for my own project for quite awhile... of course, I have not had time lately to work on it. It's also my understanding that MasterBooda is adding some really nice features which should be out soon. Overall, the experience with the engine has been great.

I've used DXGame as well, it is definitely full-featured and continues to get better. However, the reason I didn't go with it is because I like the layout and naming conventions used in DaBooda better. That's simply a personal preference. Both engines are very good.

As for the others mentioned, I have not looked at any of them so I don't have an opinion.

Hope my $0.02 helps.

Hey John,

No problem and certainly no apologies needed for voicing your opinion on this forum. If you detail what exactly you're trying to accomplish you will probably get a flood of comments from all of the excellent programmers who visit VBGamer. :)

Dave --

I appreciate your reply, and I apologize if I was too hasty in my condemnation of the dxadmin response to my query on your board. It just seemed rather underhanded, from my perspective, to have deleted the topic, locked the topic, and then banned me -- not that I was banned, as you point out, but that's certainly how it appeared. So please accept my apologies; I misread the circumstances.

At any rate, I am just looking around at different DX front-ends at the moment; I simply have an idea in mind for a game and I am trying to sort out the best approach to realizing that vision without teaching myself DX or OGL from square one. So I appreciate your mention of some other engines to check out.

The demos that you have on your website for dxG look very cool, and I will eagerly watch the development of your engine. I wish you and your team the best!

And to the rest of the community, my original question still stands. If anyone has a favorite engine, please do tell!

peace,

John.

Hi John,

Actually everyone was banned for a while there, due to a mistake on my part. ;) You should have no trouble logging in, making an account and contributing to the forum... if you desire to do so.

I remove posts all the time when users start advertising their own engines, or start promoting other engines on our site. Our site is for the discussion of our product. There are many excellent sites like this one to discuss engines if that's what you want to do.

You posted a direct link to another engine (Dabooda I think) and offered the question "why dxgame?". That really doesn't sound like someone asking for opinions of our product, but more like an advertisement for another product. If your post was something like "Why use DXGame compared to other engines" and without posting a link, there would not have been a problem.

"I found that 'dxadministrator' had locked the topic and edited everyone's replies until the text contained nothing but glowing words about dxGame."

Actually there was no glowing words about our product at all in that thread before it was removed. If there was I would have left it there. ;)

"If he can't embrace a discussion about the relative merits of his software and the "competition's," especially this early in the development..."

I get emails ALL the time from end users asking about our engine compared to others. I've referred users to HGE 2D, Xeno, and others. Game engines aren't about competition, they are about fitting someone's needs. If the DXGame Engine isn't up for the job, I have no problem sending referring them.

My suggestion to you is download and try out all of the engines available. Research: HGE 2D, Spritecraft, Xeno, Dabooda, PGE 2D, Torque 2D, and others. Its a GREAT time for doing 2D games, 2D is back in a big way! Good luck and by all means feel free to email me directly about our engine and I'll shoot ya straight.

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely check out mole studios.

Also wanted to let everyone know that since my last post I have been definitively turned off of dxGame. I posted more or less the same question as above at their forum. Within an hour, my post had vanished. Puzzled, I reposted. I received several well-considered replies from fans of dxGame, which I appreciate greatly. However, I suddenly found myself banned from the forum.

When I got back on to the forum from my office computer, I found that 'dxadministrator' had locked the topic and edited everyone's replies until the text contained nothing but glowing words about dxGame.

At any rate, I'm not particularly troubled by the attitude of the admin, but I must say that his actions seem to suggest strong insecurities about the capability of his own engine. If he can't embrace a discussion about the relative merits of his software and the "competition's," especially this early in the development of dxGame when such a conversation would be especially beneficial to the engine's growth, then I have serious reservations about the future of the engine.

Long live open-source. This sort of thing clearly wouldn't have happened in a public-controlled project.

Peace,

John.

Ive looked at both the past few months, DXGame seems to be targeting the novice users, however their feature set seems to be growing every month, for open source I would go with Dabooda 100%!!! So in your case Dabooda seems logical. I also like SpriteCraft for alot of cool reasons too. :) (Molestudio.com)
